Chinos are a wardrobe essential, timeless summer classics as practical as they’re versatile.
You’ll spot the chino-wearer on holiday, boarding a yacht with boat shoes at St Tropez for a sunset cruise, clinking glasses on the lawn at a summer wedding, or reclining on a deckchair just beyond the boundary at an English cricket match.
And yet chinos aren’t English at all. They found their unique name during the war between Spain and America in 1898. They take their name from a Spanish word meaning ‘Chinese’, because the fabric came from China.
Chinos are a must in every gentleman’s wardrobe. They’re a great smart-casual alternative to jeans, combining modernist flair with plenty of functionality.
Keep it sharp but casual by teaming chinos with a layered top half – t-shirts, overshirts and bomber jackets. Smarter occasion? Opt for a slimmer fit with a tucked-in t-shirt and a blazer. Color-coordinate or mix-and-match. You decide.
At Senszio, we use a blend of cotton and elastane, which provides the stretch. We source it from Tessuti Di Sondrio, a 125-year old mill on Italy’s Adda River. Choose from 40 different fabric options. Can’t find a shade you like? Let us garment-dye your pants for a unique look.
We’ll ask you how you intend to wear your chinos. In the bar at weekends? At the baseball match? Walking the promenade on holiday? With jackets or polos? Sockless and breakless, maybe? Then we’ll craft your chinos specifically to your measurements.
Chinos are made to relax in, whether you’re at the boardroom or the boardwalk. They should be breathable and flattering, not skintight. The originals were designed to be mobile and that spirit survives.
Compared to suit pants: the waist should sit lower than suit pants and have a shorter rise; the Hips & Thighs should be slightly slimmer; the knee and cuff should 1″ – 1.5″ slimmer. As for the length, the Chinos are typically paired with slip-on shoes such as loafers or tassels, so they should end 2″ above the sole of the shoe – this should give you a minimal break on the pants.
Our Chino’s are machine-washable. The composition of the fabric coupled with the minimal internal finishing of the trousers allows our Tailored Chinos to be machine washable with the temperature not exceeding 30°C and then Line-dry. Do not tumble-dry.
They can also be dry-cleaned – if you choose to do so, inform your cleaner to do it with delicate care.
As our Chinos are garment-washed, there shouldn’t be any shrinkage if the instructions above are followed.
