Top trends in business suits for spring 2014

So what are the top trends in men’s business suits for spring 2014? It’s key to look at Men’s Fashion Week, held in London, Milan and Paris last summer, for a showcase of the following year’s spring/summer collections. And the trend this year is very much ‘relaxed luxury’.

What does that mean? It means trousers cropped at the ankle, no socks, casually smart jackets, and even sandals.

Exposed sleeves

There were plenty examples of how to achieve this look on the European catwalks last summer. For some, it meant exposed sleeves that scrunch up. For others, it involved turned-up jacket sleeves.

Jackets tend to be longer, trousers are tapered at the ankle and can come with high cuffs. Double-breasted is in again, although you should think tight and tailored, rather than baggy and 80’s.

Skinny is another buzzword for business suits in spring and summer 2014. Yes, it’s the Justin Timberlake look. Thin ties are teamed with thin pants and slim jackets. Trousers often come cropped short. If you’re feeling daring, you can wear rope-sole sandals or sockless shoes with your bespoke suit.

Pure-white suit

Another wardrobe essential this year looks like being the pure-white suit – again, cropped at the ankle. Add some interest with an accent colour in your shirt or pocket square.

What else is in? Floral, plaid and checked blazers, and even floral-patterned shorts worn with a suit jacket. And if you want to accessorize, brown leather is the way to go. If you can’t bring yourself to carry a man bag, we suggest a soft-sided brown-leather briefcase, which offers the best of all worlds.

In summary, keep it short, skinny, rolled-up, soft-sided and scrunched-up, and you can’t go wrong.
